Tour wrap-up
We have just returned from our short CMJ tour which took us to Providence and back. Our sets included: "Hoover", "Little Shaver", "Honeybee", "Matador", "Avalanche", "Art Teacher", "Needle in the Sway", "Oh, Glory", "Abe", "Shiver Me" and an unreleased song, "Diamonds". We had a day off in Richmond and had the opportunity to work on a new song called "Moonlight" which we played live for the first time ever in Atlanta our last night of tour. We dedicated the song to Ryan Quinney who joined us on drums for this trip. We were honored to be graced with his presence and skills. That same night we dedicated "Diamonds" to the lovely Liza Kate from Richmond, Virginia (she likes the "stoney" parts of that song). We were lucky enough to share the stage with her each night. She took good care of us boys, putting us up and cooking for us as we passed through Richmond on our way up and back. Liza is generally a great person to lean on in a van or otherwise if you are so lucky. We miss her already.
New York shows went well. We had two showcases in the City on Wednesday, both at Pianos. The nighttime show we played right before Mr. Evan Dando. As I entered the over capacity room to check out his set, I was forcibly removed and thus still lingers the question, "Is Dando still pretty?" As we started our show, tufts of fur from his leopard skin bolero jacket and discarded roses still littered the stage.
The next night we played in Williamsburg at The City Reliquary (their current exhibits include: "Miss Subways, Past and Present" and an amazing copper bundt pan collection). We were lovingly hosted by Dave Herman, Bill Scanga and the Reliquary staff. We played in the courtyard out back on a chilly Brooklyn night under the glow of colored lights and before a shrine of fake flowers that framed the stage. Scanga affixed a branch of cherry blossoms to my mic stand. Thankyou, Reliquary, for one of most memorable nights on tour. Civic! And thankyou to our friends for turning out.
Other highlights of the tour include: a cold, cold night at the kickoff of tour and of the Palomino, a stay at Heather's farm house outside of Chapel Hill, T-Pain app lunacy, witnessing the jaw dropping set of Death Vessel in Providence, french toast with a little coconut milk at Liza's, late night pizza with Mike Stoltz, the overheard gem "She can do as much crack as she wants. She's fucking hot.", the expression "dandonged", football in the park in Richmond (cracked ribs and all), the knowledge of when during a set a Norwegian metal band removes their shirts, the kind folks and good eats at Noni's, being greeted with homemade apple pies in Providence (thankyou Art), the couple that drove from Tennessee to see us in Atlanta and you. Thank you to all that came out to see us. Thank you to those who help us set up shows. Thanks to Warren for drums and Ryan Murphy for the van. Thank you to Alan for the beautiful projections. Thank you again to Ryan Quinney and Liza Kate. We are planning our next outing soon. Hope to see you then.

JULY 28
New Album/New site
Holopaw is ecstatic to say that we are finally releasing our third record, Oh, Glory. Oh, Wilderness. on the Bakery Outlet label in September the 8th of this year. This will be accompanied by a vinyl release on Obscurist Press (featuring alternative artwork and a poster). We will also be releasing a 7" on Houseplant Records that includes the album track, "The Hobbyist and the Conductor (Avalanche)" and the B-side, "Snow-packed Hush". Both of these songs showcase our dear friend and collaborator, Erin Tobey.
What has Holopaw been doing in this vast gulf between releases aside from making babies (Jeff Hays) and making artwork (John Orth)? After a brief tour supporting our second Sub Pop release, Holopaw splintered. Michael Johnson ,Ryan Gensemer and Tobi Echeveria moved to Philadelphia leaving the Holopaw stripped to it's core members, John and Jeff. After a stunned hiatus we got together to write, imagining ourselves as a self contained acoustic duo hearkening back to the early days. The new songs came quickly: "The Cherry Glow", "Little Stallion", "The Art Teacher". After demoing the first practice Jeff stated, "We need a band." The new material seemed to demand more than hushed, acoustic arrangements.
New members were slowly added, Patrick Quinney (guitar), Jody Bilinski (drums), Krista Molinaro (cello), Jeff Mcmullen (bass) and ,most recently, multi-instrumentalist, Matt Radick. Over the next year we wrote the songs that would become the album, Oh, Glory. Oh, Wilderness. Over several months and trips to New York, we recorded the songs with Jermey Scott (vivian girls, these are powers) at Civil Defense studios in Brooklyn, USA. We embellished the songs with horns (Jeremy Scott and Peter Evans), violin (Jena Kim), piano and calvinet (Mark Griffey), clarinet (Pete Woods), and the amazing vocals of Erin Tobey. We are really proud of this record. It has more swagger, bounce and growl than previous efforts but maintains the sweetness and dense lyrical mystery that has come to define Holopaw.
After the record was complete we briefly considered a self-release and then entertained a long conversation with our friend Isaac at Glacial Pace about signing to his label. The timing didn't work out right for either of us so we decided to join the Bakery Outlet family. We are excited for you to hear this record. Hopefully it was worth the wait. While we have been waiting for release, we have written an album's worth of new material so there is plenty more Holopaw to come. We will see you in Gainesville or on tour in September.
